FUS-MRI Focused Ultrasound Ablation Center

Medico-Innovation Technologies

Medical Innovative Technologies offers a comprehensive solution for the creation of an innovative Focused Ultrasound Ablation Center under the control of FUS-MRI magnetic resonance imaging.

The key elements of the project are the ExAblate system for non-invasive ablation with focused ultrasound from INSIGHTEC and the 3.0T SIGNA Architect magnetic resonance imaging scanner from GE Healthcare.

The INSIGHTEC equipment is widely known worldwide for its amazing results, leading clinics can no longer imagine their work without it. The system is now also available in Kazakhstan.

About the technology

Focused ultrasound MRI ablation FUS-MRI is a non-invasive surgical procedure in which focused ultrasound (FUS) remotely coagulates clearly delineated areas of specific tissue within the body under the supervision of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

High-tech FUS-MRI ablation enables non-invasive removal of tumours, nerve endings that are sensory sources of pain, as well as pinpointing of conductive pathways in the brain.

FUS-MRI is a combination of focused, high-intensity ultrasound that coagulates selected points within the body under the supervision of magnetic resonance imaging, which provides visualisation of anatomical structures, ultrasound guidance and real-time heat control.

Operations with FUS-MRI technology are performed on an outpatient basis and do not require anaesthesia. The duration of the FUS-MRI procedure depends on the volume of tumour nodules and their number, with an average of 3 hours.

Advantages for doctors

  • Completely non-invasive technique;

  • No trepanation;

  • No radiation exposure;

  • Real time MRI data definition of the area of intervention;

  • Real time thermometry during treatment;

  • Physiological response analysis;

  • Precise formation of clear foci of destruction down to 2 mm in size.

Advantages for the patient

  • No device implantation;

  • Instant results;

  • Less or no risk of infection;

  • Just one treatment session without anaesthesia;

  • Rapid recovery and minimal hospitalisation time.

Application in neurosurgery

With the ExAblate neurosurgical system from INSIGHTEC doctors can perform controlled, non-invasive tissue destruction with high precision without the use of ionising radiation.

An important feature of the system is the possibility of reversible exposure through the use of sub-therapeutic levels of ultrasound intensity. This makes it possible to adjust the parameters of the treatment area to the physiological response of the patient before the treatment begins.

Treatment of the brain tissue is carried out without cranial trepanation. This means a minimal risk of complications and a short recovery period.

The procedure does not require anaesthesia. Instant excellent results are achieved in just one session.

Fields of application

  • Thalamotomy and pallidotomy for essential tremor, tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease and neuropathic pain approved in Europe (CE Mark);

  • Focal therapy for prostate cancer (CE);

  • Palliative care for bone metastases and pain syndrome (FDA, CE);

  • Treatment of uterine myoma and adenomyosis (FDA, CE).

Previously, treatments for uterine myoma and adenomyosis (FDA, CE) were only available abroad, but now that Medical Innovations & Technologies has brought this medical solution to life in Ust-Kamenogorsk, this procedure has become easily and quickly available for all residents of Kazakhstan.

Projects

The first and innovative in Kazakhstan innovative in equipping the operating unit on the basis of the "Project profile center of oncology and surgery" of the EKR in Ust-Kamenogorsk.
